Met Gala 2013

This year's Met Gals's theme was 'Punk: Chaos to Couture'. It was exciting to see how our fashion forward attendees defined punk. While some were pleasant surprise, some were disappointments and some just blankly ignores it altogether.

Black is possibly the first color on your mind when you think of punk, and so did Cara Delevingne, who opted for a spiked black Burberry number. The plunging dress fitted her to a tee and the dramatic smoky eyes was the perfect addition to the look. Love!

Kirsten also went for a plunging choice, opting for green Louis Vuitton. The feather adorned dress paired with the dark red lips, made for an impressive take on punk.

While I love Ashley Greene's Marchesa gown, I'm not quite sure how this channels punk. If the theme was Victorian, this would've been a touch down.

I could hardly think of anyone else who could pull off this look the way Ms.Osbourne does. The black Marc Jacobs dress with yellow obi and purple headgear was perfectly in theme and in sync with her style. She surely got punk in her DNA.

Kelly Osbourne

Uma arrived in a truly elegant green Zac Posen, adorned with bright red lips. Again it was a complete ignorance of the theme, but love it nonetheless!

Uma Thurman in Zac Posen

This right here is punk done right, subtly. Cameron Diaz wore a sapphire blue Stella McCartney cloaked dress and adorned it with a spiked belt, and looked absolutely ravishing in it. Beautiful!

Cameron Diaz in Stella McCartney

Carey  Mulligan didn't even try to dress up for the costume gala, let alone follow the theme. The petite actress simply through on a Balenciaga LBD, which was just plain blah. Disappointing!

Chanel Iman took the route of pink dip dyed hair to show off her inner punk. Dressed in a black and white striped J.Mendel, she looked lovely.

Plaid for punk? Ummmm....
But Christina Ricci  managed to pull it off in a Vivienne Westwood Couture, paired with sheer stockings and a retro do.

Model Coco Rocha was fierce in a leopard skin printed Emanuel Ungaro dress with embellishment. More than the dress though, my focus was on the sleek, sharp fringe do and the striking smoky eyes. Wow!

Spurring up a lovely surprise was Dakota Fanning in Rodarte. The black dress with sheer back and midriff might be common, but the wings addition made all the difference, giving it a punk rock edge!

Miranda Kerr not looking gorgeous is impossibility, but I just wished she payed more attention to the theme an d punk up her style a little more, The spiked clutch didn't quite cut it.

Miranda Kerr

Nicole Richie was on the head-turners list for the evening. Donning a white embroidered dress by Topshop, wine lips and tanned make-up, topped off with grey hai. Punk to a tee.

Hailee Steinfeld wore a custom leather dress with gold safety pins from Donna Karan Atelier. While the idea of safety pin embellishments might have been cool and exciting, it wasn't quite the case in real. The silhouette didn't quite do anything for her either. Better luck next time.

Minka combined punk with greek goddess for he event and the result was spectacular. The wine tone suits her to a tee

Minka Kelly in Carolina Herrera

Here's an odd one. The one who sets the theme for the night showed up in a pink floral gown by Chanel. Though she insists, she's following the theme because "pink is the color of punk". Really Anna??

Anna Wintour in Chanel

Doutzen Kroes went all out with leather in a Theyskens Theory black corset dress. The asymmetrical daring gown was a punk dream and the Victoria Secret beauty looked positively fierce in it!

While I absolutely love Elizabeth's gold Atelier Versace dress and her Brian Atwood leather fringed footwear, I just wished she went for a dramatic eye make-up. Would've made for the perfect punk look.

Elizabeth Banks in Atelier Versace

Emmy Rosum was one of the major head turners of the night with her gorgeous smoky eyes and braided updo. The contrast between the romantic Donna Karan Atelier gown and the punk rock styling was a delicious combination. Love the fringed earrings!

Ginnifer Goodwin went all out with the punk theme, donning a gold  and black Tory Burch dress with leather trimmings. Add to that, the spiked hair and dramatic eye make-up.

While Giselle's Anthony Vacarello dress had unique metal detailing, it didn't quite come off in the pictures. Despite her punk rock attitude in front of the camera, the outfit itself didn't do much.

Giselle Bundchen in Anthony Vacarello

Gwen Stefani wearing black and white was expected, but the singer still managed to make a statement thanks to Maison Martin Margiela design. The bow dress made her look like a stylish Christmas present.

I expected much more from the recently declared 'Most Beautiful Women in the World'. The bright pink Valentino gown was beautiful, but blah.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Valentino

Looks like Heidi was missing her annual renewal of vows because she decided to wear a bridal dress by Marchesa, ignoring the punk theme altogether. Can't deny she looked radiant.

Heidi Klum in Marchesa

Ivanka went for a Juan Carlos Obando dress only a few could pull of. She accessorized the look with punk style gold cuff and necklace. Love her colored highlights.

Jaime King presented herself in a Topshop pantsuit at the ball She added the punk vibe via a spiked golden crown and the eye-covering straight strand ala punk.

Jaime King in Topshop

January Jones was unrecognizable at the event. While wearing a simple Chanel LBD, she went for a dramatic eye make up and braided do. Now that's punk!

January Jones in Chanel

JLo looked wow in a Michael Kors creation. But even more amazing was hairdo, which brought out the punk theme.

Jennifer Lopez in Michael Kors

Jessica might have subtle glam punk in mind, but it didn't quite come through via this Tory Burch dress. She looked nice nevertheless.

Jessica Alba in Tory Burch

I'm not quite sure I'd call Jessica Biel's look in Giambattiista Valli dress with matching plants punk. This is reminding me of Black Swan, though. Whatever it was, I love it!

Another one in Topshop was Julliane Hough who resorted to their silver strapless voluminous number. The "Rock of Ages" star donned dark eyebrows and an edgy do. Wouldn't say its punk, but she looked amazing!

Julliane Hough in Topshop

John Krasinki went for a classic tux and matching him was wife Emily in a black Carolina Herrera keyhole dress. While the dress was rather safe, she played it with her twisted updo and bright pink eye-shadow. Love!

While most attendees went for floor length, Kate went short and asymmetrical in red Alberta Feretti. She punked it up withe dramatic danglers, smoky eyes and updo. I just wished the hair was bit more dramatic.

Kate Beckinsale in Alberta Feretti

While Jason Sudeikis kept it classic in a 3-piece tux and spruced it up with sneakers, Olivia wore a slinky Calvin Klein number. While I love the dress, I wish she did something with her hair and make-up to punk it up.

Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde (in Calvin Klein)

Miley was so comfortable in her Marc Jacobs netted dress that she wants to wear it everyday. While I'm not quite a fan of the dress itself, its definitely punk.

Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs

Being the ambassador of Gucci, it was no surprise that Blake Lively opt to wear the brand for the grand event. The feather and organza train dress was gorgeous and no doubt Blake looked spectacular in it, but again it failed to spell the punk.

Blake Lively in Gucci Premiére

Donatella embraced the punk theme donning a sheer paneled Versace number with spiked shoulder and cuff. Add to that was her countless rings. Love the outfit, wished it was on someone else though.

Donatella Versace in Versace

While nothing about her look spelled out punk, Jennifer undeniably looks gorgeous in her Dior Haute Couture and net veil.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture

Another 'love it or hate it' look was that of Kim Kardashian's Givenchy. The heavily pregnant reality star wore a floral print gown with thigh high slit, which highlighted her bump. While the silhouette was gorgeous, I'd rather see a different print. This was overwhelming! Her dark red lips and severe ponytail, however, I love!

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian

Kristen Stewarts style in general already spelled out punk and her choice of wearing a lace paneled Stella McCartney jumpsuit with edgy hair and make up definitely exudes it, I do have a minor gripe with the fitting of the jumpsuit, something is definitely wrong around the crotch area.

Kristen Stewart in Stella McCartney

Madonna might have succeeded in channeling Madame Rouge but this was more comic con than costume gala. And I'd like to see her in something more of her age, its getting scary.

Madonna

Oh, Alicia, I expected more from you. While she chose a punk themed dress, it was a bit of a deja vu.

Alicia Keys in Jason Wu

Kerry's dress might not have necessarily channeled punk, but her leather gloves and black tullé train surely did the trick.

Kerry Washington in Vera Wang

Katy Perry channeled Joan of Arc, who she claimed as "the original punk", via her Dolce & Gabanna midi. While it was a fun and quirky choice, it didn't at all scream punk.

Katy Perry in Dolce & Gabanna

Why the Olsen sisters are fashion babies still baffles me till date. Ashley attended the event channeling a starfish? Her orange sparkly costume was a big question mark to me personally?

Ashley Olsen

Mary Kate was in her usual grunge style, with a navy dress and oversized floral fur coat. Neither sisters screamed punk to me.

Mary Kate Olsen

Amanda Seyfried's look in Givenchy Vintage was a delicious combination of drama and elegance. Admittedly, not following the punk theme.

Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy Vintage

Beyoncé's Givenchy was that dress which is gorgeous as an idea but didn't transpire as well in reality. The artsy border was already much to begin with and the boots and gloves could've been done without. Add to that a studded belt, this was just as good as a plane crash,

Beyoncé in Givenchy

Nina Dobrev sprung up a pleasant surprise in a black Monique L'huillier. A pants and skirt combination could easily be disastrous, but Ms. Dobrev proved it differently. The sexy-chic ensemble was punk perfection!

I must say, I expected something a bit more outrageous from Nicki Minaj, given she loves to do crazy costumes and what better event to do it than the Met Gala, but the AI judge gave a rather more tamed look, which I must say, I dig. The simple Tommy Hilfiger judge was perfect to balance out the punk rock hair.

Anne debuted her newly bleached hair at the event. Accompanying it was her daring Valentino dress with sheer panels and vintage furry cuff from the designer. Finally, an experimental look, which followed the theme, which worked amazingly.

Anne Hathaway in Valentino

Elle Fanning has always been very experimental with her fashion choice. Choosing the same designer as her elder sister, didn't made her go as subtle. The tie dye print with voluminous sleeves might not be a hit with everyone, especially with the addition of the colorful eye make-up, but I love the effort!

Elle Fanning in Rodarte

I'm not quite sure what was the thought behind picking this dress for the gala, but Emma didn't score any brownie points for this one. One point was that it had too much skin show. Second, it was way too safe for the event in question. Third, it didn't even go with the theme

Emma Watson in Prabal Gurung

Katie Holmes picked a demure white Calvin Klein dress with a dramatic train. She attempted to punk it up via the smoky eyes and updo, but it just didn't do enough. She looked beautiful nonetheless.

Katie Holmes in Calvin Klein

Rooney Mara, who was over the moon with the evening's theme, wore a Givenchy Haute Couture gown with zipper detailing. She topped it off with dark lips. This is truly fashion meets punk!

Rooney Mara in Givenchy Haute Couture

Rita Ora looked positively sexy in a cut out Thakoon dress. While she looked beautiful and glam, this was agin a complete ignorance of the theme.

Rita Ora in Thakoon

SJP's look for the night was the 'love it or hate it' sort. Printed Giles Deacon dress,  paired with Louis Vuitton boots and Philip Treacy headpiece. I, surprisingly, found myself loving this look. Although I never care much for headgears on red carpet, this one however added to the look!

Sarah Jessica Parker in Giles Deacon

Sienna Miller wore a plunging white number with cropped studded biker jacket by Burberry. If that wasn't enough, she even added a spiked hair accessory to the punk look. Punk perfection! (Lust the jacket!)

Taylor Swift took on the punk theme with flare, wearing a black J.Mendel with sheer panels. Love the crusted neck embellishment! And although a lot might have quirks about the hair, I'm approving it!
